Oh, cry me a goddamn river. If you don’t like how the Film Crew does it, then stop your whining, go record an iRiff for what you consider a bad movie, and show us all how it’s supposed to be done. You have the option right in front of you, so put up or shut up.

    Agreed.

Furthermore, comparing Rifftrax to MST3K and lamenting the guys’ decision to do “good” movies misses the point and makes an apples-to-oranges comparison. If you want bad movies, there are about 200 episodes of MST3K out there, Cinematic Titanic, and a handful of cheesy movies on Rifftrax (Troll 2, Missile to the Moon, Over the Top, Roadhouse).

And this perpetual “don’t riff good movies” debate is useless because of the one big factor that a “good movie” is totally subjective. When, at the end of Star Wars episode 4, Bill said something along the lines of “THAT was THE Star Wars?”, I agreed with him. Star Wars is an okay movie, but I never saw it as much greater than, say, The Phantom Menace. But the consensus, which implies opinion is fact, says that I should hate Phantom Menace and love A New Hope.

When are people going to realize that riffing is not always about taking something bad and making it good, but about taking something serious and making it funny?

Little Black Star: Thanks for the very helpful mini-review on the Memento RT. I of course expected that part would be tasteful. I love how Joel, Mike and the gang would tactfully decry violence and abuse against women. My fave example: Girls Town. Scene where Mamie hits Mel Torme (or was it one of his thugs?): Mike and the ‘bots: “YAYYY!” Movie then immediately cuts to scene of goon trying to rape her sister: MatB: “BOOOO!” lol

Film Crew is not Rifftrax! Why does everyone have to compare Film Crew to Rifftrax?! Mehmehmeh! Whinewhinewhine. Seriously though I LOVED how the Film Crew did it. They did it the right way. I bought all four DVDs the day they were released. It’s this new “lets just arbitrarily riff every and anything” stuff that RIFFTRAX is doing that disappoints me. I’m a big fan of the guys, and it’s because I KNOW THEY ARE VERY TALENTED. But riffing movies isn’t as simple as just blindly picking any movie to riff (which is exactly what happens when the choice is based on what movies are popular and sold lots of DVDs, and NOT what movies would actually make for good riffing). Do you not realize how many movies they actually TURNED DOWN when they were making MST3K? And in my opinion any movie that is actually a respectable work of film is automatically missing the main ingredient of what makes riffing actually work. Also please let me know where I can ship the river you requested.

    @ Thrifty

“When are people going to realize that riffing is not always about taking something bad and making it good, but about taking something serious and making it funny?”

Tell that to the Rifftrax guys, because no matter what they are riffing they will at least pretend it is horrible, and make many jokes about exactly how “horrible” it is. And now after twenty years of movie riffing being about making fun of BAD movies it suddenly isn’t actually about that anymore simply because riffing good movies now makes Rifftrax more money? Sorry but I don’t buy that.

And saying that something being a “good movie” is totally subjective is a cop out. By that standard we should not have art museums. I mean if it’s as easy as saying “it’s all subjective” who’s to say that any painting is more worthy of respect and preservation than any other painting? Some people might think their flea market painting of a crying hobo clown belongs in the National Gallery of Art right next to Dali’s “The Sacrament of the Last Supper”. But as a society we actually do have some collective sense of quality, and some movies lie at very obvious positions along the spectrum that has “good” at one end, and “bad” at the other.

    Uncle Bill,

I’d give examples, except that I have seen 70+ Rifftrax and can’t remember a fraction of the riffs. I think you’re interpreting the existence of a Rifftrax as an attack of some sort. If you approach a Rifftrax with the idea that they chose the movie because they think it sucks, you’re going to view the whole thing through that filter. If you approach it with the idea that they’re going to make fun of an aspect of the film, take something serious and joke about it, while not interpreting it as an attack on the film as a whole, I find it makes a better experience.

But that’s just me. Obviously the product isn’t right for you, and there’s no reason to complain about it.

  6. Thrifty – Interesting point when you say that you can’t remember a fraction of the riffs from the 70 or so Rifftrax you’ve seen. Me neither. Yet, I can rattle off literally hundreds of MST3K riffs (even from the Mike era).

    Is Rifftrax not as memorable?

    Little Black Star,

I think it just means my memory is structured different from yours. I can’t remember that much from MST3K either.

I would point out that “The Film Crew” refers to Mike, Kevin and Bill as a team and not simply the four-DVD project they did a few years back, but you seem to be EXACTLY the sort of moron an explanation would be wasted on.
