Mary Jo To Appear in Independent Film

Mary Jo has agreed to do a small role in an independent movie called “Cherry Bomb,” set to begin filming in a few months. The movie’s writer, Garrett Hargrove, says the movie tells the tale of an exotic dancer (stage name Cherry Bomb) who seeks revenge on the men who assaulted her and got away with it.
Mary Jo will play a nurse who helps Cherry recuperate after the attack, and comes to sympathize with her patient’s desire for revenge.

Garrett would also like us to mention that the filmmakers are looking for investors/donations (aren’t we all?). You can request a business plan at contact@cherrybombfilm.com.

    Wasn’t Marry Jo a nurse in real life before becoming a writer?

    Great news. I had the pleasure of meeting Mary Jo in Oct after the Minneapolis showing of BoTV and I can definitely see her doing a great job in a role which will no doubt require warmth and kindness.

    Sounds a little Kill Bill-y, but I’m sure MJ and the movie itself will be awesome.

    And speaking of Tarantino, wasn’t “Cherry Darling” the name of the go-go dancer who got her leg torn off and replaced with various guns in ‘Grindhouse: Planet Terror’?

    Maybe MJ’s character can recommend a super-intelligent mountain gorilla and psychic albino to carry out the hit on the rapists.

  5. David says:

    Planet Terror was not the half of Grindhouse that Tarantino directed, that was Planet Terror.

    I’ll keep up with this, but I don’t know how I feel about seeing Mary Jo in a low budget rape/revenge flick. MST3K always made sure to cut out any sexually violent material, and I just get a weird feeling picturing a Best Brains veteran in an exploitation movie.

    That said, I wish her the best of luck making the film and we’ll see if it manages to get released.

    Yeah, I know, Quentin directed ‘Death Proof’. Regardless, I stand by my point that “Cherry” might be used in fictitious pole-dancers’ names a bit too often. Do they have a database for the frequency with which stripper stage-names are used, like the yearly lists for baby names?

    And on the spectrum of rape/revenge/exploitation flicks, “I Spit on Your Grave” set the bar so low that anything starring Mary Jo will undoubtably soar by comparison. I have higher hopes for “Cherry Bomb” than I did for “Meet Dave”.

    However the film turns out, I’m sure Mary Jo will rock.

    The plot is a woman seeking revenge on her attackers? Now there’s a plot idea that hasn’t been done more than, oh say, 10 to 1000 times. Seriously, that is an often visited story idea in many films, both low budget and mainstream Hollywood. Offering anything new on that tired gem will be like climbing a mountain for the writers.

    Regardless of how the film itself goes, all the best to Mary Jo. I hope they make good use of her talents. I’m sure it must be fun being in a low-budget movie and who knows, if it doesn’t turn out well maybe one day she’ll be making fun of her own film in a CT/MST3K type project.

    Hmmm sounds like:
    * Axe
    * They Call Her One Eye
    * The Bride Wore Black
    * I Spit On Your Grave
    * Kill Bill

    I,m sure there are more examples, but those are 5 I can think of off the top of my head. This one sounds like a carbon copy of the 5 I named above.

    Hey all,
    I wrote (and am producing) Cherry Bomb. Just wanted to chime in and say a lot of the films you guys are referencing were a big influence on writing this script. There’s even a lot inspired by some of the movies I watched through MST3K like Angel’s Revenge. And I’m sure a lot of you watched those films through MST3K and said “I could do a lot better.” Well, we’re going to try. But I fully understand people’s trepidation towards new revenge films because it is a common theme amongst a lot of movies. Its a hard line to walk trying to pay homage to those films and coming up with something new, but we are really excited about Cherry Bomb.

    And I totally agree that Mary Jo will rock.

    How much do I need to donate to get a producer credit?

  14. The Professor says:

    Ah. This be one of those “We can’t pay you but we’ll put your name in the credits” type of movie. :wink:

    But, really, this sounds awesome. If Mary Jo is willing to do it, i bet it’s far more intelligent than most rape/revenge flicks.

    Tarantulas,
    If you send us an email at contact@cherrybombfilm.com, we’ll send you our entire business plan. It outlines Return on Investment (20% in 1st position), profit split and how much investment to get Associate Producer Cred/Executive Producer Cred, etc.

    Hey all!

    It is great to see all the responses on this already. Looks like Mary Jo has one heck of a great following (No surprise there). I am really looking forward to the results of all the hard work these guys have already put into getting this film ready. They are holding nothing back, and for an independent film, I think they will do it justice quite well. And who knows where it will go from there.

    Here is the website if anyone is interested. It includes teaser trailers, galleries, and a blog to keep you updated on casting, filming, etc. You should check out who might be playing Cherry….
