Weekend Discussion Thread: Best Pearl Moments

We’ve begun season seven in the episode guide, and that means the arrival of Dr. F’s mom, Pearl, who became M&TB’s torturer in seasons eight, nine and 10.

So what is your favorite Pearl moment from the entire series?

Me? I’d have to go with her half of the duet with Observer in “822- OVERDRAWN AT THE MEMORY BANK,” “When Loving Lovers Love.” So funny.

What’s yours?

“Clayton! Clayton! Claydin! Claydin! Oh, Clayton!” Hilarious just for us to watch, and according to the Poopie Reel and ACEG, funny to take part in as well.

I really love Season 7 in general. I seem to be in the minority here, but I think that the new direction led to some hysterical host segments. In addition, the choice of movies was spot-on.

So many great moments, it’s hard to pick just a few! But I have to go with . . .

#1: Mike’s visit to the van and the “Why are you evil?” conversation.

#2: The PBS pledge drive spoof. Not just the song — the whole thing is comedy gold.

Honorable mention: “It’s a John Agar film festival for you!” For some reason that always cracks me up.

John Seavey, #98, thanks for reminding me of yet another fine Pearl moment, at the end of Hamlet. Her whole exchange with Fortinbras, with her barely contained fury, is fantastic: “Well, hey, there’s a body!… Is it me? Am I a magnet for these idiots?”

I always get tickled at the host segment in It Lives By Night where Mike and the bots are trying out their new soup strainers. Mike’s is normal human size but that doesnt’ really do it for Pearl. Then “Art” pops up with his huge ‘stache and when we cut back to Pearl, her cheeks are bright pink and she’s all excited and wants him to come down and hot tub with her later.

I love the show the whole way through and I think Mary Jo did a great job throughout her run

Allright, Pearl and Clay didn’t have the unique Frank and Dr. F. magic. But she could deliver the laughs, and if she hadn’t had to fill Frank’s shoes I’m sure there wouldn’t have been all the negetivity directed at her.

As for Pearl being unlikable, well her appearance was like getting to meet Mrs. Bates after seeing Norman in action for several years. It made total sense to me.

Pearl trying to rule Tom at the start of Final Sacrifice. It’s not the best moment of the scene (“Sorry baby, no one rules the Tom monster!”) but those couple of seconds after Observer takes Tom away are great.

How about a “favorite moments” poll for Bridget? She was around as a writer a long time with very little screen time–even though everyone remembers her work very fondly!

I wasn’t crazy about Season-7 Pearl, but Mary Jo came into her own when Pearl became the head Mad. I think John Seavey (#98 above) has the right description for her: deranged sincerity.

I love most of the scenes everyone described above, but my two current favorites (they change periodically) are her discovery of Castle Forrester (“as if I had been… drawn here by forces greater than myself HEY, SHUT UP!” — “The Projected Man”) and her casual effort to escape imminent death in the Roman dungeon, only getting riled when brainless Brain Guy repeatedly misinterprets her order (Pearl: “Not GOOSE down, you dope! Bring Mike down!” / BG: “Mike, everyone says you’re ugly and dumb, and no one likes you.” — “Space Mutiny”).

The way Mary Jo effortlessly shifts between Pearl’s many moods and attitudes is hilarious, yet somehow totally believable for her quirky character.

One of my favorite moments would be in “It Lives By Night” when she’s showing Observer and Bobo a slideshow of all her (mysteriously) deceased husbands.

Also when the Space Children are first introduced. They want to call her ‘Mom’. She does not take well to that so they opt for ‘Grandma’. She takes to that even less.

I laugh so hard when everyone gets replaced by pods, and Pearl says those awkward phrases like “enjoy our quality.”

Anyone see the “Poopie!” outtakes where Mary Jo couldn’t keep a straight face for about 5 takes or something while filming that scene? That makes the whole thing even funnier!

When Brainguy decides to leave (I believe this was in “The Deadly Bees.) And Pearl is upset that Brainguy would leave them and her voice gets all high and squeaky. Hilarious! Then that song she sings with Bobo to convince him to stay.

Then when she comes upon Bobo and Peanut fixing the neighbor’s Thermonuclear device and and you see her thinking fast, and she tells them “I’ll be right back” and then she high tails it out of there. ROFL!

And of course, “When Loving Lovers Love.”

I loved Pearl. I thought she was just as funny as Dr. F. Also loved Bobo.

    I almost forgot.

“Riding with Death.” When she thinks Bobo is dying and she tells Mike she’s sending the worst movie ever and it “sucks on toast.” LOL!

People are going to hate me for chiming in again, but I can’t help it. So many funny bits!

The look on Pearl’s face when she thinks the villagers are coming because they hate her and wish her dead, and they are bringing her a cassarole and welcoming her to the neighborhood. And Brainguy tries to cheer her up by telling her, he hates and despises her and wishes her dead. Pearl just plays it to the hilt!

ok another fav for me is “Gramma Pearl does not want you jumping on that couch”.

A good weekend topic discussion could be “Favorite Comfort Segments”. I watch mst3k every night before bed but every few episodes I pull from my top 5 and rewatch one of those for the billionith time. just an idea.
