Weekend Discussion Thread: Best Pearl Moments

We’ve begun season seven in the episode guide, and that means the arrival of Dr. F’s mom, Pearl, who became M&TB’s torturer in seasons eight, nine and 10.

So what is your favorite Pearl moment from the entire series?

Me? I’d have to go with her half of the duet with Observer in “822- OVERDRAWN AT THE MEMORY BANK,” “When Loving Lovers Love.” So funny.

What’s yours?

I think Pearl really came into her own when she got to the Sci Fi channel. She got the pacing down and knew how to work those camera angles.
My favorite moment was when she disconnected the SOL in Diabolik. It made me realize just how much I would miss (and how much I really liked) Pearl. Evil yet clueless.

I’m with Sampo, the first moment I thought of was her and Brain Guy singing for “Pearl Pearl Pearl Pearl Pearl”

“I know a couple of guys”
    “They really do like pies”

One of my favorite Pearl scenes is where she has Mike over to the Widowmaker (was that the name of her VW van?) for a cup of coffee.

Mike: So, Pearl, why are you so evil?

Pearl: (thoughtfully) I guess I’m filled with hate. I don’t know if that helps….

    Mike: Yeah, yeah it does….

    Pearl: Well…

    Mike: Yep. I suppose…

The moment in Parts: the Clonus Horror, when she is explaining the facts of life to Darlene, with all those inappropriate metaphors. “Oh, Grandma Pearl, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” “Neither do I, dear…”

Oh, man, I can’t believe I forgot Mike visiting the Widowmaker in Time Chasers! Thanks, fathermushroom (#5) – that actually IS my favorite Pearl moment – the thing about being chilly, and how it’s supposed to get down to absolute zero – “That’s why I always wear a sweater” – is wonderful.

I’m with Snowdog. Loved Mary Jo and Bridget’s snipping in the Roman Times arc. Also enjoyed Gorgo where Pearl brings Leonard Maltin in to help torture Mike and the bots. I don’t really have any favorites from her time before the Sci Fi Channel. Or as they changing it to, the Sy Fy Channel. (For those who cannot spell Sci Fi?)

  15. Episode 702 – The Brute Man, when Pearl goes out with Sandy and says ‘I don’t know when I’ll be back, and there’s no number where you can reach me.’ Dr. F’s tortured ‘Mother, noooo… Well, it’s not the first time some oily man has taken Mom to the mat.’ was the clincher.

People have already mentioned a lot of good Pearl stuff. I’d throw in:

“Terror From the Year 5000”- The Pearl vs. Bobo fight, ending with Pearl’s declaration of humanity (Bobo: You forget- I’m not human!).

“Agent From H.A.R.M.”- Pearl as the prosecuting lawyer, especially when cross-examining the little Amish boy

“The Final Sacrifice”- The whole concept of ruling the world one person at a time is great, very Dr. Forrester-esque.

“Blood Waters of Dr. Z”- Finding out what Pearl considers ‘love’…

I had a Pearl moment last night. We were playing team trivia and the halftime question was, “Name the four top 100 TLC hits.” We drew a complete blank so I put down “When Loving Lovers Love” among other skewed TLC references. The DJ read my answers and the crowd howled.

Yup, comedy gold is the gift that keeps on giving.

“When Loving Lovers Love” was a great duet.

Another moment that for some reason cracks me up is in the intro for “Delta Knights” when Pearl gets ulra-upset when Mike reveals that he’s not bothered much about being in space (personally, I think Mike did that on purpose knowing it’d piss her off).

While not Pearl’s biggest fan, my favorite moments: She digs in her bag for something for Scooter to eat .. hearts of palm, Rose’s lime juice, and other ironic items which Scooter will of course later ‘heft.’

When Mike and the ‘bots bid them bon voya-jee as she gets ready to enter the wormhole with Brainguy, and she rattles off, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no (about 20, I think) .. you’re going with!

Her touching chat with Mike aboard the Widowmaker

And I love how the bots love her when she gives them candy in the theater!

Those are all good but my favorite has to be in Giant Spider Invasion. First she berates the inhabitants of the satellite about them not being able to go camping and after being freed by bobo from the zuchini throw pillows she decides since they watched the movie without her watching them watch the movie that they had to go back in and do it again.

Also not a huge fan of Pearl, though I think MJP is a great writer and riffer. My favorite Pearl moment has to be from 703-Deathstalker: “I dreamed a gold man was reading to me from a dirty book.”

I know this was traumatic for some MSTies, but I always enjoyed the trombone recitial in #701 Night of the Blood Beast (the non-Turkey Day version). It’s where we found out Dr Forrester’s FULL name! Then again, I named myself after Dropo.

  24. Ditto the song “When Loving Lovers Love.” We quote that song all the time in my house. I LOVE the addition of the fingernail extensions.

And ditto the Widowmaker scene with Mike out in space.

I just want to add her hideous makeup face after she was crying in Diabolik when she realizes that the experiment is over and how she mushes together the phrase “I don’t even care.”

1st Choice: at the end of Giant Spider Invasion, where an un-impressed Pearl reacts to BoBo saving the whole galaxy with “Have you been drinking?”
2nd Choice: in Final Sacrifice, when Pearl attempts to rule Todd Gunderson, starting with “Well……Todd!”

My wife loves Pearl, but the most quotable moment for us is from “Phantom Planet.”

“Check out Pearl ‘World Conquerer’ Forrester’s stupid-y doomsday stupid device. Maybe this whole ‘taking over the world thing’ is dumb. Why don’t you do it or somethin’?!”

  28. Nicias says:

Pearl gets lots of great line reads, mostly because she is so manic and enthusiastic about her ridiculous experiments (eg, “I am happy…robot misidentified candy bar.”). Several good lines have already been mentioned, but here are a few of my favorites:

“We have a word for this kind of film in the illicit pharmacology business…..CRAPPPPP.” (Future War)

“It’s a delightful bambi romp through a flowery fairy land of happy harmless fru-fru family fun for the whole family of all ages…..OR IS IT?!!!” (Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders)

“From now on I’m playing the ponies on some well meaning liberal’s coin! KA-CHING!” (Overdrawn at the Memory Bank)

I think a lot of her best lines come from seasons 9 & 10, when she and her henchmen are established in the castle. It let the writers resume their preferred format, giving Pearl her own “Deep 13,” and allowing them to concentrate on clever lines rather than setting up a new premise or plotline each week, as they were forced to do in season 8.

Ditto the previous mentions. I’d like to throw Pearl promoting “Officing” and humor wacky fun days at work. Nailed the stupid management seminar field.

  30. 817 – The Horror of Party Beach:

Her catfight with Flavia: “You are so brave to wear that with all the goat hairs sticking out of the moles in your back.”

    907 – Hobgoblins:

“YOU couldn’t turn me on if you had a dozen naked Gerardos and Fabio in tight leather pants.” (rolls eyes, puts hands to cheek) “Oh… oh… where— where was I? Oh yeah!”

    1003 – Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders

(Smilingly charming) “[Today’s movie is] called ‘Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders’ and it’s a delightful Bambi romp through a flowery fairyland of happy, harmless, fru-fru family fun for the whole family of all ages.” (Turns maniacal) “Or… IS IT?!?!!! TASTE THE RAINBOW OF FRUIT PAIN, HA HA HA HA HA!!!”

That last one ALWAYS has me rolling, no matter how often I see it.

  31. Sorry, I hadn’t realized that a couple of mine were mentioned already; consider them second votes. :D

I agree that once the “Castle Forrester” premise was set up, things got more relaxed and the chemistry between Mary Jo, Bill and Kevin really took off.

My friends and I love her expression “…and it sucks on toast” which she used twice. It’s funny both times.

And I’d like to add my vote for the moment Pearl looks up, after her long tantrum in “Diabolik,” and her makeup has run completely down her face.

  32. One other thing (and I promise it’s the last) — one of my favorite things about Pearl is that she often interacted directly with MIKE on the same stage — something Trace, Frank and Joel never did. (Seriously, during Joel’s tenure, Dr. F and TV’s Frank never appeared on the Satellite, nor did Joel appear in Deep 13. They were always separate.) Pearl and Mike’s chemistry was equally strong… the aforementioned “Time Chasers” chat, the bit where Mike debates ape movies with his tormentors, and the time he tries to distract Flavia while Pearl and the others escape. It made the whole back premise more entertaining and engaging.

I was never a big Pearl fan, but “Loving Lovers” never ceases to make me laugh, although unfortunately it takes for that earworm to leave my system! I also like how she’s one of the guys at the end of Jack Frost – “Snag me a brew!”, opens bottle with teeth.

Speaking of SciFi changing to SyFy, WTH? Everyone knows SciFi is short for science fiction. What is SyFy short for – syphyllis?

  35. Spector says:

I’m with Snowdog, Pearl’s interaction with Flavia during the Roman times segments were hysterical as Mary Jo and Bridget has terrific chemistry.

You know, it’s too bad that they couldn’t have worked out a scenario whereby Mary Jo and Bridget could’ve developed their charactersinto the tormentors of the SOL, but then again folks probably would’ve knocked the show for using them as the female versions of Dr F and TV’s Frank. And we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to see Kevin as Bobo and Bill as Brain Guy.

As I’ve said in other posts, Mary Jo really took off with the character of Pearl during the Sci-Fi years and the host segments were quite enjoyable, especially as she would often torment Bobo and Brain Guy more than Mike and the Bots.

It was just in Season Seven that her character didn’t work.

I’m still a fan of her first appearance, when she and TV’s Frank turn out to be old friends.

I’m also partial the “I’m filled with hate….I don’t know if that helps” line.

Another favorite moment is when she says after the “accidental turn ons” gag, when she says something like “you couldn’t turn me on if you had a dozen naked Gerardos and and Fabio in tight leather pants………oh……oh, um…where was I?”

  41. Dames Like Her says:

When she visits Frank and Dr. F. as they fondle their comic books. She’s not especially funny, but she gets to play herself and seems someone who would make a good friend. Again her chemistry with Bridget is sweet.
And I love her torturing her son while ‘ill’ even to the point of calling him while he’s right in front of her. I had to care for my sick mother who would exhibit this behavior. I mentioned it to a nurse who said ‘Oh yes. She was ‘puppeting’ you.’ Apparently it’s a common behavior among the sick… I don’t know why but each ‘Clayton- Clayton- Clay-tonn…’ get funnier. And making sure he’s remembered her requested items, Nails Be Strong, etc. again reminds me of my mother.
    I love Pearl.

I agree- I always wished Bridget Jones got a more substantial part after the Roman Times arc… My concept? A future reincarnation of Flavia with a Data-esque robot sidekick played by Paul Chaplin.

I agree it was unfair that Mary Jo had to carry both breaking in Pearl AND the new “different adventure every couple episodes” format right out of the gate, although I do like a lot of those episodes…

Another great pearl moment: “Guard… Water… Sick man!”

Another vote for the Time Chasers Pearl and Mike interaction, featuring Crow as Art.

Her pleading for Mike to help them in the prison (Space Mutiny) was I believe her best line reading/acting. Good stuff.

  44. pablum says:

Mike and Pearl’s little chat in the van in Time Chasers has got to be my favorite.

Followed by Pearl’s despair at her fate and nonchalant manner of making “peace with God or… whatever” in Space Mutiny.

And then of course her breakdown in Diabolik when she becomes aware that she’s wrecked the experiment.

Public Pearl segments in Overdrawn at the Memory Bank was funny and all and is one of my runner ups, but the segments may have gone on just a bit too long for my taste.

I always giggle at the opening to Space Mutiny, when Pearl snatches a guard’s plastic sword and bashes Brainguy with it. She does it so perfectly, and the accompanying sound effect is so hilarious, that I can’t help it. There’s something Three Stooges-esque about the scene.

And I have to second the vote for her reaction to Brainguy’s dismay about the wormhole. “A what-hole? A worm-what?”

I loved ‘Quest of The Delta Knights’ when she sat in with the ‘bots and became their hero. My sister and I still quote it: one of us’ll say ‘You’re funny’ and the other will reply ‘You bet I am.’ ‘She gave us a mint!’ is another favourite. And of course, from ‘Night of the Blood Beast’: ‘CLAYTON DEBORAH SUSAN FORRESTER!!’
(Which is fun to say when you’re exasperated. It makes people wonder.)

For me, it’s a toss-up between “Penguin Costumes” (Best Rage-Face Mugging), “Pod Pearl” (“They’re throw pillows. THEY’RE. THROW. I don’t even remember which episode it was, but her delivery on the line “So, Mike, I accidentally lied” when she reneged on her end of a deal struck with Mike and the Bots was CLASSIC.

Also, I love how she and Frank are all happy to see each other in “Soultaker” while Joel and Mike are clearly uncomfortable. Something about that seemed so true.
