RIP Jimmy Weldon

BURBANK, CALIF. — Jimmy Weldon, a voice actor, ventriloquist, television host and movie actor, died here July 6. He was best known as the voice of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon character Yakky Doodle and the host and ventriloquist in the locally produced television series The Webster Webfoot Show. He was 99.

As a young man he was in the U.S. Army, serving with the combat engineers under U.S. Gen. George S. Patton. Weldon’s squad liberated the Buchenwald death camp. He has discussed his experience as a motivational speaker.

    Like Betty White, Billy Graham and Eddie Albet he was so close to 100! (just checked, 3 months!)
    He lived a long life, I believe he was the last classic era Hanna-Barbera actor.

    My wife watched him on Webster Webfoot in Fresno as a kid.
    There’s a site, LostFresno, with a great article called “Webster Webfoot-My Favorite Childhood TV Show.” Somebody did a lot of work on this: a great selection of photos and clips. It’s worth going to, because if you scroll to the bottom it’s also got a great Phantom Planet poster and a little anecdote about a local guy who drove Collen Gray (Liara) around in a local parade.
