Dick Butkus, RIP MALIBU, CALIF–NFL defensive lineman Dick Butkus, a Chicago Bears legend who is regarded as one of the greatest players in league history, died Oct. 5 at his home here. He was 80.
Butkus’ college career at Illinois earned him a place in the College Football Hall of Fame. He also dabbled in acting, and MSTies might recall his role as Hennerson in the movie in episode K15- SUPERDOME. He was mentioned in a host segment in episode 422- DAY THE EARTH FROZE. The legend is that in one game an opposing player claimed that Butkus had tried to bite his ear off. Dick replied that it couldn’t have been him because the ear was still attached. RIP
Actually, Butkus was a linebacker, not a defensive lineman.
I remember him best from those Miller Light commercials from the 80s, along with those tv series he appeared on, all with Bubba Smith. They had great chemistry together. May both rest in power.
