Weekend Discussion Thread: Favorite Songs

Okay, I have been struggling with this all morning, and finally, painfully, managed to get it down to 15, eliminating some classics in the process.

In episode order:
CREEPY GIRL. Episode 204- Catalina Caper — For me, this is the song that really started it all. Sure, there were songs before this, but this one established the combination of Mike’s composing skils and Kevin’s lovely Irish tenor.

IF CHAUFFEURS RULED THE WORLD. Episode 206- Ring of Terror. — As a singer, Frank is a great comedian but he gives this one plenty of heart before Dr. F drops some scenery on him.

GODZILLA’S GENEALOGY BOP. Episode 213- Godzilla vs. Sea Monster. — Another one of those goofy/nerdy outings that mostly works because Joel, Trace and Kevin sell it.

SLOW THE PLOT DOWN. Episode: 314- Mighty Jack. — Maybe the best plot shanty ever.

PATRICK SWAYZE CHRISTMAS. Episode 321- Santa Claus Conquers The Martians. — Quickly becoming the standard Crow hoped it would be; brilliantly zany.

A DANGER TO OURSELF AND OTHERS. Episode 406- Attack of the Giant Leeches. — Wagnatz!

PANTS! Episode 410- Hercules Vs. The Moon Men. — One of those Joel songs were he seems a little crazed, which adds to the fun.

HIRED! Episode 423- Bride Of The Monster. — It would make no sense to anybody who had not seen the short that precedes it, but for those who have it’s an very observant parody.

TUBULAR BOOBULAR JOY. Episode 519- Outlaw. — Giddily naughty fun.

MERRY CHRISTMAS, IF THAT’S OKAY. Episode 521- Santa Claus. — A perennial favorite and a still-relevant skewering of political correctness.

ENDLESS FRANK. Episode: 523- Village Of The Giants. — Love Mike’s Paul Williams impression.

WHO WILL I KILL? Episode: 624- Sampson vs. The Vampire Women. — Trace gamely warbles a classic as Frank departs.

WHEN I HELD YOUR BRAIN IN MY ARMS. Episode: 807- Terror From The Year 5000. — Funny and nerdy at the same time. A gem.

WHEN LOVING LOVERS LOVE. Episode: 822- Overdrawn at the Memory Bank. — A great example of Bill and Mary Jo’s chemistry.

I WISH I WAS BACK IN OLD CANADA. Episode: 910- The Final Sacrifice. — A sensation when this episode debuted. Why did this song strike such a nerve?

Least favorite:
CELEBRITY SIBLINGS. Episode 311- It Conquered the World. — Thin premise stretched even thinner.

What’s your list look like?

I’ve got to blow off the dust from my DVDs, pretend it’s Thanksgiving, and have a MST3K marathon. I could only think of nine.

    1) A Danger to Myself and Others from – Attack of the Giant Leeches
    2) Only Love Pads Out the Film – Sidehackers
    3) A Patrick Swayze Christmas – Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
    4) Ninja Master Theme Song – Nina Master (1 or 2?) … Kind of lame, but amazingly infectious at the same time
    5) I Wish I Was Back In Old Canada – Final Sacrifice
    6) Ode to Pants – Hercules and … somethingoranother
    7) Where, Oh Werewolf – I think that was from Werewolf
    8) The Rowsdower song during the end credits of Final Sacrifice
    9) And of course Mike’s piano-bar rendering of the Gamera Theme Song

    Again, in no real order.

    1. “Who will I kill?” (Samson vs. the Vampire Women) – First and favorite song
    2. “The Bomb Song” (The Deadly Mantis) – The harmony between the cultists is just perfect.
    3. “Wild Rebels” – I’ve used this song to convince my little cousin that such a cereal exists.
    4. “I’m Going/Staying” (The Deadly Bees) – Wonder how many takes that one took.
    5. “The Canada Song” (The Final Sacrifice) – My fiancee is Canadian and HATES when I sing this. Great for teasing.
    6. “Toobular Boobular Joy” (Outlaw of Gor) – That song alone doubled the number of words in the English language to call a woman’s bosoms.
    7. “Sidehackin’ is the Thing to Do” (The Sidehackers) – Also like the messed up take in the outtakes reel.
    8. “Pants!” (Hercules vs. the Moon Men) – I wear mine every day!
    9. “Danger to ourselves and Others” (Attack of the Giant Leeches) – Former proud owner of a genuwine hillbilly fishin’ rod (ie: stick o’ dyn-o-mite) mahself.
    10. “Hear the Engines roll Now” (Pod People)- It Stinks!
    11. “When Loving Lovers Love” (Overdrawn at the Memory Bank) – I really do like pie too.
    12. “There’s a creature in the Swamp” (Boggy Creek II) – That’s it.
    13. “Creepy Girl” (Catalina Caper) – The second ‘E’ is just for phoentic correction or you’d just be crepy girl.
    14. “Patrick Swayze Christmas” (Santa Conquers the Martians) – My way or the highway!
    15. “I am Sad” (Girl in Gold Boots) – Mike! Forget about the rainbows and the puppies and GET OUT!

Least favorite: “Killer Shrews” – Hearing it over and over on the DVD menu makes it the most annoying thing ever.

And ryan’s comment about the dull music comes from Segment 3 of Pod People.

Mike’s “I Am Sad” from Girl in Gold Boots tops my list. Also the song “Where is My Werewolf” and the song sung at the end of the movie to the closing credits.

I loved Bill’s one-offs in Puma Man, “Puma Man, he Flies like a moron.” and “When you want the flavor of bacon in a dip.”

Kevin’s “Drivin down the road, lookin for a Waffle House, drinkin lotsa Wild Turkey” from Boggy Creek

The guys multiple takes on “She Swings When She Sings” in Giant Gila monster are also hysterical.

    3. Ode on Estelle (She’s cute, she’s rooty-toot-toot, I’ll bet she smells like juicy fruit”

    4. “Creepy Girl” from my all-time favorite ep.

    Here we go:
    1) Idiot Control Now (303 – Pod People): …sack of monkeys in my pocket, my sister’s ready to go…

    2) Clown in the Sky (303 – Pod People): It’s been said – it’s the quintessential MST song. There you go.

    3) A Patrick Swayze Christmas (323 – Santa Claus Conquers the Martians): Or maybe this is the quintessential MST song. Who knows.

    4) Ode to Estelle (411 – The Magic Sword): Crow’s Catrall lust may have been nice, but they go all out with this song. And Tom’s list can’t be beat.

    5) Gypsy Moons (417 – Crash of the Moons): Gypsy’d rather date Stacey Coon.

    6) Hired! The Musical (421 – Bride of the Monster): COME ON AND HAVE SOME LEMONADE!?

    7) Toobular Boobular Joy (519 – Outlaw): How in the heck do you write a song like this?

    8) TIE – Whispering Christmas Warrior / Merry Christmas, if That’s Ok (521 – Santa Claus): While most would put the latter before the former, I can’t ignore the awesome power of VIXEN LETS EXPLODE!

    9) Mystos! (522 – Teenage Crime Wave) Youth is better, old is stupid!

    10) The Greatest Frank of All (523 – Village of the Giants): The greatest song ever done by this show. Period. Hands down. Go away. “Knowing that love could be Frank if only the sun and the moon would collide to be Frank!”

    11) The United Servo Academy Men’s Chorus Hymn (612 – The Starfighters): Beautiful stuff here.

    12) The Bouncy Upbeat Song (619 – Red Zone Cuba): Narrowly beating out the happy things song from Tormented. Gypsy’s aria is fantastic, fantastic.

    13) Sodium! (817 – Horror at Party Beach): The kids today…

    14) Aire on a Delta Knight (913 – Quest of the Delta Knights) Servos combine = beautiful. I’m strong and I’m savvy and I’ve got these!

    15) To Earth! (1013 – Diabolik!) A great way to end the series! Maybe we’ll meet Colin Firth!

Honorable mentions to the Square Dance that gets out of hand in Bloodlust and Supercalifragilistic-expiala-wacky! from The Sword and the Dragon

    1) Where O Werewolf- “Just then his hairy paws caused the wheel to slide! I screamed! Too late! We hit a tree! He died!”

    2) A Patrick Swayze Christmas/Merry Christmas… If that’s okay…- I’m big into Christmas. BIG into Christmas. These two songs are on my Christmas playlist every year.

    3) The Sir Thomas Neville Academy- Not all that funny but really well done.

    4) When Loving Lovers Love- More for the way Mary Jo sings it to the camera. Hilarious!

    5) Master Ninja Theme Song- For how Joel interjected, “Master Ninja Theme Song!” inbetween portions of the letter he was reading while the bots sang the instrumental parts.

    6) A Michael Feinstein Gamera- “It sneaks up on you… ‘Boo’ it says…”

    7) Clown In The Sky- “I love you Tom Servo.” “I love you Joel.” “I love you Crow.” “You’re not my real father!”

    8) Sidehackers- To be clear, not the actual verson, but the version from “Poopie” where Joel screws the lyrics up and just ends up singing, “huya huya huya huya” over and over.

I find myself constantly Blurting out “He tried to kill me with a forklift” so that has to be #1 followed very closely by “Hideous control now, Idiot patrol now” we need to come to some consensus on the name of that one and label it a staple…and speaking of staple, Gotta have “A Patrick Swayze Christmas” I like more but I’m tired and have to work in the morning.

I don’t know what it is; but when Joel croons ‘CLOWN IN THE SKY’ from POD PEOPLE; I find myself humming ‘Tell me where does all the magic go…when the curtain falls to end the show….”

Kinda tells you it’s over; but we’ll be back. It can mean alot of things like losing one relationship and finding another. And I am still looking for that ‘CLOWN IN THE SKY’. Kinda poignant.
