Weekend Discussion Thread: The Prop Auction–What Did You Get? What Did You Want?

Alert reader Christopher asks:

How about, “What did YOU get from the MST3K Prop Auction?” or “What did you WANT to get from the MST3K Prop Auction?” Maybe throw in “why” for extra credit.

That about says it. I didn’t bid in the auction, but if I had to pick, I think I’d love to have the “Cholester-do-all.”

You?

I got one of the Observer costumes. It was advertised as the only complete one they sold with robe, pants, shirt (or tunic I guess), and gloves. I really wanted to get one of the jumpsuits Mike wore, but like many others have said, it would have just been too expensive, so I was glad to get a costume that can be easily seen in several episodes. I just would like to know who actually wore it, but from what it looks like, they were probably all shared by the three Observers.

I hope it’s okay if my list is unrealistically long. I would have liked Micro Golf, Screaming Skull Crow, Pinbolis, The Sign Language interpreter, and Gypsies Costume from Deathstalker.

I got the SOL flare gun. (It’s just an empty flashlight with some paint and tape and stuff but it looks pretty cool.) I think it was from Ep 1012: Squirm. I tried hard to snag Joel’s spaceship from Soultaker but the bids just spiralled out of control.

I won the Hugh Beaumont house/ship from The Human Duplicators. I seem to recall it being pretty cheap (maybe 50 or 60 bucks). Someone mentioned the Doppel Cube from Overdrawn at the Memory Bank… In retrospect, I would have really liked to have gotten that as it is now one of my favorite episodes. Unfortunately, at the time of the auctions, I had not seen any of the sci-fi channel episodes (cable company didn’t carry it). So, along with most of society’s evils, I blame my lack of this collectible on the sci-fi channel.

We bid on several things, nut in the end only won one: Tom Servo’s painting “Tyrrany of Crow”. It’s huge – about 5′ to a side! Luckily it is canvas over styrofoam.

    I still have an active eBay search for “mst3kprop” in case someone decides to resell. ;

Thanks Gorn. Yeah, I think that they were probably too big to ship, but they also look like cardboard in the pictures MST3Ktemple has of a tour on his website. Either someone on the show took them or they were just not feasible to ship. But a girl can dream!

@58 They didn’t sell the big silhouettes of the Mads during the eBay auctions, but there was also an on-site auction at the Best Brains studio. They may have sold them there because they sold off a lot of big items then. I know they sold a lot of the large poster size pictures from the movies that were hanging behind Jack Perkins, er…Mike, when he did the MST Hour intros.

I managed to score the skull ship from “Teenagers from Outer Space” and the SOL model used in SciFi era shows and the movie. Trace keeps threatening to steal them from me.

This is all great stuff! Personally, I was still in highschool when the auction was going on, and I didn’t even find out about until it was over!

I just had an idea; was there any sort of catalogue or official printed listing with pictures of all the items for sale? Usually when there’s an auction of this kind of popularity and magnitute, an auction catalogue is made to let bidders see what will be put up and let them decide what they’d be willing to bid on.

If there wasn’t an “official” catalogue, I think it would be awesome for folks who bought items to compile pictures of them in the diuscussion forum with maybe a sentances about when you bought it and where it is now; hanging in a loving place of honor above the mantle, or sitting in the garage because the SOL doors from the Joel era are just way to big!

    What do folks think?

I really wanted Crow’s chicken puppet because the idea of a puppet owning a puppet tickled me.

I think there were two sold, so if you wanna sell…

I knew that most of the really cool auction items were high-probability going to end in astronomical bid amounts, so I did not go for anything.

Not that I`m an unappreciative clod…I`m a long-time major fan and always will be…

So I spent $500. to have a ‘Tom Servo’ made. :)

He holds a place of honor, situated within sight of the tv, and while he doesn`t say anything…he does seem to look rather disgusted with some of the things on the screen.

I got a “Brain Belt” beer bottle and a piece of the set (plastic dog’s head). Unfortunately, since the head is so small, I have never been able to actually spot it when I watch an episode. Thank goodness for that certificate of authenticity!

I don’t remember how much I paid, but it wasn’t completely outrageous. I want to say that together they were less than $200, or maybe even $150.

Didn’t get a darn thing, since (I’m guessing) the auction was held during my (now infamous) ‘lost weekend’ in L.A., with a guy named Lennon ……… ;-)

Thanks mst3ktemple @59, I’m sure that’s where they went! Some lucky someone has them. I’m glad they weren’t tossed, but I am jealous of whoever is enjoying them now.

    I won a few items:

    Mikey, the Mike Sprite (~$500)
Brainguy’s Uniform ($566; the hood was auctioned separately)
    Pearl’s Season 9-10 Uniform ($309)
    Remote Bulldozer Camera (~$75)

I would like to have won: Girl in Gold Boots film can, Tyranny of Crow painting (hint, hint @57), Crow’s Turkey Volume Guessing Man costume.

@42 I also saved the pictures of all the auctioned items, along with the HTML design of the auction listings. I even copied and pasted the completed auctions info from Feb-Apr 2000 (when they stopped auctioning items) into a Word document. It’s basically the title, dates, # of bids, final price, etc. Anyway, if you ever decide to put the pictures up, let me know if you are missing any.

@69 Thanks for the kind offer, tvgm! Would it be a simple matter to make images of the auction listings as they appeared from the HTML you saved?

  22. tvgm says:

@71 I’m going to have to play with it a little longer because it’s not displaying the images. It has the locations and file names correct, plus it opens in Firefox just fine, but it’s still just blank.

I could send it and the two images that went with it to you, if you like.

I won the blue “Amazon Mom” tee-shirt. I was in middle school at the time and spent a month’s worth of my paper route salary to buy it. It’s been framed and hanging in my bedroom and now living room ever since. I’m taking it with me to the Cinematic Titan show when it comes to Detroit, hopefully I can get it signed by some of the cast.

I’ve always wondered who got the Pink one…

I won the John Banner head from the “Banner-Gram” machine from CRASH OF THE MOONS! BOOPIE!

Don’t remember how much I paid, but it was probably too much. Oh well, it’s a truly one of a kind item and it’s mine you hear? ALL MINE! AH HA HA HA HAAAAA!

@72 tvgm, I finally found the pictures. (About 14 megs worth.) There are 377 pics in all, I’m pretty sure I got all of them. Can you recommend a good place to upload a zipped file to? That way anybody who wants the pics can get them.

  26. tvgm says:

@75 Wow, that’s nearly 3 times as many pictures as I have. I got most of mine from the website best brains used to host the auction pictures, so they must have been deleting some when adding others.

Anyway, as far as websites, rapidshare, megaupload, and mediafire are all pretty good for uploading files to. Then you could post the link in here or on the mst3k discussion board (http://forrestcrow.proboards.com/index.cgi?).

While it would be a huge undertaking, it would be pretty cool if this site downloaded the pictures and attached them to the ebay listing section. That way people could click on the item and see what it looked like.
