Tubular Boobular Joy tops my list.

Is this our weekend discussion topic? It’s a good one. And a tough choice, there are many hilarious songs on the show. Perhaps the only comedy show with a more regular and integral use of music as part of the comedy is The Mighty Boosh.

Some of my favorite MST3K songs:
    – Idiot Control, Hideous Control…
    – Wild Rebels Cereal commercial
    – Sidehackin’
    – Tubular Boobular Joy
    – Tibby Oh Tibby
    – Creepy Girl
    – Gamera Is Full Of Meat
    – They Tried To Kill Him With A Forklift
    – Sandy Frank Song
    – Hired! The Musical

LOL! I swing into high with the Wild Rebels cereal spot tune whenever I’m out on a country road where I can drive a little too fast around some curves. Although, in my head it’s always Alaimo singing it in his proto-Sinatra slur rather than J&TB.

    Here are my fave songs:

    The Gamera song
    Sandy Frank Song
    The Fugetive Alien Musical
    Sidehackin’
    Slow the Plot Down
Let Me Be Frank about Frank
    etc

Good list, but how can you leave out Where oh werewolf? I’ve seen it dozens of times and I still love it. And Pants! And Creepy Girl! I think this list needs to be longer.

Okay, so I guess we have two ‘threads’. I have to put at the top of the song list “A Danger To Ourselves And Others”… so appropriate in political debates.

As others mention on that website, “The Canada Song” is a HUGE omission………in my opinion, it has to make the list.

Also, “Loving Lovers Love” should be A LOT higher……..Mary Jo and Bill SO hit this one out of the park, that #10 just seems too low for this hilariously GREAT song/performance…..

But what’s MOST amazing to me about this list, is the fact that this 20+ year old show is still so relevant to so many people………..then again, by stating that, I’m sure I’m just ‘preaching to the choir’…… ;-)

It’s practically impossible to narrow it down but it’s a decent list anyway.

The lack of “Where, Oh, Werewolf” just makes me question the whole list.

Of all the songs from the entire MST3K run, my favorite remains “The United Servo Academy Chorus.” OK, I melt over anything Kevin sings, but he has outdone himself with this song technically as well. What’s really fun is to make a list of all the songs he rips off in this incredibly clever and hilarious number. And why, WHY was it not included on the tape of songs from the show???

    An outrage!

Sodium and Creepy Girl not in the top 13? :)

One of my favorites is “When I Held Your Brain in my Arms” performed by Mr. Murphy and the “peepers” in Terror From the Year 5000.

Then, there is “O, Sweet Mother of Mine” from First Spaceship on Venus. I’m not familiar with the entire song, but it seemed like it may not have been wholly appropriate for vespers.

I love Ethan’s list, mostly because I don’t agree with it. I get that “Merry Christmas… If That’s Okay” was a little too genuine, in that it was really the MST3K cast singing a song, not Mike and the Bots (i.e. it was “outside” of the show), but then to include the “MST3K Theme of Love”. How is that NOT outside the show?

I was, however, delighted to see “When Loving Lovers Love” included in the list, which floors me EVERY TIME I watch it!

Patrick Swayze Christmas and Idiot Control Now are my faves, but they left out Clown in the Sky, which is also one of the better ones.

I agree, ‘Judith’ (though “The Greatest Frank of All”, probably edges it out for me, but just slightly)………still the BEST reason for watching MST’s version of the complete waste of celluloid that is “The Starfighters”.

If I ever get the chance to meet Mr. Murphy in person, I’d love to ask him exactly how they went about recording this one……..from Kevin’s beautifully intricate harmonies, to the ‘wall of sound’ production, I believe this one gives even Phil Spector a run for his money……

Hard to believe that with all his inherent musical ability (not to mention his incredible singing voice) that Kevin Murphy is unable to read music……

#17 That’s not extremely unusual. Lots of famous musicians develop musical talent at a young age, never receiving formal training. I’m sure learning musical notation would seem superfluous for someone with perfect pitch who can reproduce a tune by ear.

According to the book “Messages,” neither Paul Humphreys nor Andy McCluskey could read music. I’ve also heard the same thing about Paul McCartney and Vangelis, though never from a reliable source.

When I started reading the list I assumed they meant within show songs, so to me the Love Theme seems kind of out of place.

And having a top 13 list that doesn’t include ‘Clown in the Sky’ is blasphemy.

    Not bad overall, though.

SAVE FERRIS #17 – Not to beat a dead horse nor to derail the main discussion topic, but I find that people who are known as musical but can’t read music never made a conscious choice to be musical, it’s just something they grew into, usually by a labor-of-love emulation of a favorite artist. As a never-formally-trained guitarist/bassist/vocalist/song arranger for my church’s band, I can certainly relate (Pearl Jam’s immortal “Ten” album was my “entrance” ). If that’s Kevin’s case, it makes his musical talent even more interesting; that it was self-developed.

Speaking of musical talent, does anyone know if Mike Nelson has any formal musical training? Of course he can play piano, but did he discover that talent on his own?

  21. Lee S. says:

#20 The interview on the Wuhrwhilf DVD seems to imply that Mike has little or no musical training. He says he owned a keyboard and would fiddle with it, and that’s about it. But maybe he was just being modest.

Thanks, hamilcar, I was afraid I was the only one that felt that strongly about “Clown In The Sky”. Also agree with everyone on “Where, Oh Werewolf” and “Creepy Girl”…it was Tom singing that and “The Hang Glider Theme From Cave Dwellers”(whatever you would call that) that got me addicted to the show to begin with. “Lyle Waggoner’s a total jerk, second only to Tommy Kirk…”

  23. Judith says:

#20 and #21: Here’s what I remember from interviews with Mike over the years: he was enrolled in music school in college before he dropped out. He may have had some piano training there and definitely some music theory but clearly he has plenty of natural talent. He also mentioned that he sang in high school musicals. Does this sound right?

My brother actually alerted me to this on Sunday. I don’t understand why “Oh Canada” wasn’t on there. Also, There’s definitely about a ton more songs I’d like to see on there, but there isn’t enough room to list them all. :)

Also, why doesn’t “Click to Insert Smiley” work anymore??

“Also, why doesn’t “Click to Insert Smiley” work anymore?”

Not sure if you’re aware of it ‘Laura’, but the Smiley’s are still operative……..but only if you remember the correct symbols to ‘activate’ them…….. :-(

Sampo, is there a reason the Smiley (for lack of a better word) ‘recipes’ were removed, and any chance we might be able to get them back ???

Sorry, ‘Laura’ for COMPLETELY missing the fact that you’re (obviously) aware that the Smiley’s are still working………….my bad…

How can you leave out “When Chauffeurs Rule the World”? I mean who hasn’t thought the lyrics, “I’d like to drop him in a bucket of boiling grease, and slowly watch him die.”

Yep, Where Oh Werewolf needed to be on the list. The line about touching his wet nose (Crow- That means he’s healthy) cracked my friend up something fierce the first time he watched it. The entire song is great though. I really liked most of the list though, outside of the love theme being included (and the Master Ninja one isn’t that funny either).

The “Please Stay” operetta in the “Deadly Bees” is number one on my list.

“Sing the praises of pants” from “Hercules vs. the Moonmen.”

The “Public Pearl” duet between Pearl and Brainguy from “Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.”

The “Godzilla Geneology Bop” from “Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster.”

And of course “Let’s Have a Patrick Swaize Christmas” from “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.”
