Weekend Discussion Thread: Best/Worst Bands in MSTed Movies

Alert reader Ken suggests:

Have we discussed favorite/least favorite bands featured in movies on the show? For example, I actually really love the Del Aires. (But they are SO FUN to make fun of.) But the VERY WORST PERFORMANCE (in my opinion) occurs at the “Radio Station” in THE DEAD TALK BACK. They are apparently supposed to be a JAZZ COMBO, but they sound less swinging than the Power Steves!

I’d agree The Del Aires are a lot of fun. As for the worst band, I’d have to pick the house band in “Incredibly Strange Creatures…” The cleaning ladies in the audience seemed to like it, though.

What would be your picks?

For some reason I enjoy Arch Hall Jr.’s music?? I even picked up a CD put out by Rhino a couple years ago titled “Wild Guitar”, and listen to it quite often!

Worst – the band from POD People.

    Honorable Mentions:
And as a Godzilla fan, anytime the Peanuts show up to sing for Mothra, it’s always a treat.

While not MST3K – I really liked the band in CT’s “The Alien Factor” with their two groupies hanging by the pinball machine.

Best: I really have to go with the “Devil made this movie for you!” band from the Wild Wild World of Batwoman. Even though that song plays over the course of three scenes in the movie, I love its simple, catchy nature.

    Worst: “My lunch goes bleeaarrgghh!”

Best: any ’60s band in any ’60s movie. I can’t hate on even the worst Catalina Caper musician (especially not Little Goof Balls Richards) and especially like the Beau Brummels and some of the Girl In Gold Boots music.

Worst: “…and the Lord said Laugh, children, laugh…”. Worst high school dance music EVER.

The Best: The Del-Aires and Little Richard. high or not Richard will never be bad. The Del-Aires actually had some talent.

The worst: Daddy-O and Tony Travis are a dead even. That one song he sang when he was debuting on tv. The music is one damn note clanged on a piano throughout the whole song. Listen again, it’s one note. it’s like Schroeder in Charlie Brown christmas when he jams his finger on that one key when he’s annoyed at Lucy and wants to shut her up.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one when I posted near the top. That is dreadful isn’t it?

My fave rave bands are the Birds in the Deadly Bees & Little Richard & the Cascades in Catalina Caper. A couple of fun facts: 1. The UK Birds sued the US Byrds when the latter group landed for their 1st UK tour as a publicity stunt. 2. The song that the Cascades did in Catalina Caper, “There’s a New World Just Opening For Me” was a Ray Davies song that was never recorded by the Kinks.

For the best I gotta go with Ken and the Pacific Gardens Combo from Daddy-O. They were pretty good, even with Steve allen on Bass. And honorable mention to the studio Orchestra in Beatniks.

Worst? It’s gotta be Chase Winstet and his Ukelele. My goodness – I still irritate my wife with the Lord said laugh song.

Glad to see that I’m not the only one who acually enjoys Archie’s songs.

And I also like the band in Hobgoblins, I’m really into that classic punk sound.

And I totally forgot Chase in Gila Monster. That may actually knock the kids from Pod People out of my number one spot for the worst.

One of my guilty pleasures is ‘fake’ rock music; that is, music made by middle-aged adults in the 60’s trying to sound like teenagers. Consequentally, I have an irrational fondness for some of the godawful music in THE INCREDIBLY STRANGE CREATURES. Also own the ‘Best Of’ Arch Hall Junior CD and, given his limitations (He barely knew what he was doing when his dad pushed him out on stage), he’s not half-bad. Still, feel obligated to mention that’s him playing the clumsy, noodling ‘EEGAH!’ Theme.

Honorable mention: How about that bongo band playing for no reason whatsoever in the record store in, I think, THE DEAD TALK BACK? “I’d ask them to leave but they’d think I was racist!”

Just found Arch Hall, Jr on iTunes. It’s a ripe slice, but the album features a lot of music and dialogue from Eegah!Got the dune buggy music on and it makes me want to go “Wheeeee!!!”

Excuse me while I go put some water in my tires.

I totally forgot about Winky playing “Sleepy Little Felon” in Manhunt in Space. He accompanied himself on that same kind of instrument that Mr. Spock used when he jammed with those space hippies. “Eat all the fruit and and throw away the rind – we’re off to Eden, yea brothers…”

Well, as far as movie scoring goes, as opposed to actual bands in the movies, the worst there would have to be the Dixieland band trying to create suspense in HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND.

worst band: The one in “pod people” (what the hell were they singing?)

best band: The one in “hobgoblins” (I dig the go-go dancer)

Best…….”Shine Your Love” from Angels Revenge…..not because of the song but because of the goofy dancing seen by some of the audience members as well as the fact that the woman singing it is HOT!

Worst…….from “The Dead Talk Back” the song that is played in the recording studio where the two policemen are questioning the character who is eventually exposed as being the killer later in the film.
