Super Bowl Weekend Discussion Thread: Your Favorite Sports-Related Riff or Bit

Alert reader “droid” writes:

Since the Packers will be playing the Steelers in this years Super Bowl, I thought it would be fun to pick your funniest sports riffs. Living in Wisconsin I’ll go with The Giant Spider Invasion on all the “Go Packers, whoooooo!!!” comments. That brings a smile every time.

I’m gonna go with Dr. F and Frank, dressed as ’70s relief pitchers Rollie Fingers and Tug McGraw, respectively, in episode 622- Angels’ Revenge. There’s just something so random about it.

What’s your pick?

DG @129, the ‘hair’ remark is another way to say ‘grow some cojones’, I think?

How about Cameron Diaz feeding Alex Rodriguez popcorn? There’s a funny riff in that shot. Go Pack!

    Red Zone Cuba:

Crow: Les Steckel begins training camp! (Worst Vikings season ever!)

    Puma Man:

Crow: He’s as catlike as Boog Powell!

The way Bill says it with disgust and exasperation is hilarious.

One of the golf references reminded me of a riff in The Black Scorpion, where all the vaquieros are riding around the volcano hole thing, and Crow(?)says in a hushed voice, “We’re on the third tee. Boy I wish they’g keep those horses off the green.” or something to that effect.

@104 future war with Wepner Vision. In the same movie, there is a reference to Randy Johnson.

@20 There was also a reference to Fred Biletnikoff in “Fugitive Alien II” when they revealed the bad guy in the last episode…errr..last quarter of the movie.

In the baseball vein, from Alien from L.A. “Now batting, Kirby Puckett.”

The “Sports Talk” back segment during “The Dead Talk Back” was funny and relevant (I interned at an all-sports talk AM radio station in college.)

“There are soccer teams all over the place,” while traveling over some mountains in “MST3K:TM.”

“It’s the agony of defeat auditions,” from the Snow Thrills short.

Lest we forget, Robert Smith (Viking all-time leading rusher) making a cameo in The Mole People.

Also included were the previously covered Tom Boerwinkle, one of my favorite AWA references “It’s a foreign object. Wally Karbo, I can’t believe what I’m seeing here,” “He’s landed just short of the green,” in Mitchell (with Crow’s masterful golf analyst tone,) Les Steckel’s boot camp and Earl Campbell thighs.

They referenced “I am having hard enough time!” in a few episodes, though I can’t recall which. That was a frustrated Bjorn Borg, I think.

I also liked Dr. F. and Frank doing Billy Jean King and Bobby Riggs, as was mentioned somewhere up there.

How ’bout Joel’s micro golf invention exchange?

    Packers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(of course)
Are You Ready For Some FOOTBALL!!!!
    BILL BUCKNER!!!
    He’s got a tree!!!!
And all the Randy(Wild Thing)Johnson references.

Of course, all the PACKERS!!!! jokes were in reference to people actually rioting and looting when their sports teams won. Did this happen in Wisconsin??? I’m just wondering. NINERS!!!!!, for example.

In Sky Divers, during one of the people looking at the sky as our heroes are diving scenes, Tom Servo says “Hey! Phil Rizzuto!” when the camera shows a young man with a prominent nose and a resemblence to a young Phil Rizzuto. Phil was a NY Yankeee shortstop in the 40’s – 50’s. He went on to become an TV and Radio announcer for the Yankees. He is in the HOF. He also did commercials for The Money Store. His rock ‘n roll claim to fame was doing the voice over in Meat Loaf’s Paradise by the Dashboard Lights.

I think that was actually Ivan Lendl.

Ah, I think you’re right. I get my European tennis players with funny names mixed up.

Did nobody mention Joel’s Pocket Pool invention? (Green felt underpants included!) I guess calling pool a “sport” is a bit of a stretch…

I can think of a couple that I don’t believe have been mentioned yet:

    The Human Duplicators
Richard Kiel lumbers toward the camera at one point, and Joel yells, “Kevin McHale, no!”

    The Selling Wizard
I recall a reference to Manute Bol.

    Are You Ready for Marriage?
Professor Hall: “I had a chum in college who had ‘the real thing’ with eight successive girls.” Servo: “Wilt Chamberlain?”
