Weekend Discussion Thread: Alternate Stingers

Next week we’ll do our first episode with a stinger. Appropriately, alert reader sjk suggests:

I’d like to see one on alternate ideas for stingers. There have been a number of movies where I’ve thought “That would have been such a good stinger!” and I’m sure others have done the same.

Well, sure! For example, I always felt that a better stinger for episode 421- MONSTER A-GO-GO would have been the off-camera voice saying “ring-ring” to tell the actor to pick up the phone. Classic.

What’s your pick?

The Thing That Wouldn’t Die: “WHY LOOK, A TRAY-SURE CHEST!” Just one of those moments where you wonder why the hell the director didn’t just do another take. My second choice would be the head in the hatbox.
Operation Double 007: I never understood this stinger, I would have probably gone with the dancing showgirls in the middle of the road.
Invasion of the Neptune Men: The Hitler Building blows up into a million pieces. It would’ve been the perfect note to go out on.
And for the episodes that DIDN’T have stingers…
The Crawling Eye: “HIS HEAD! IT WAS TORN OFF!”
The Robot VS. The Aztec Mummy: The robot’s terrifying walk.
The Mad Monster: Popeye-esq granny snickers.
Women of The Prehistoric Planet: “HI-KEEBA!” THUD!
The Corpse Vanishes: Bela gets knived in the back.
The Crawling Hand: “No dancing, not allowed!”
Robot Monster:”HOW DO YOU CAlCULATE THAT?! ON WHAT POINT ON THE GRAPH DOES MUST AND CANNOT INTERSECT?!”
The Slime People: The writer and his goat.
Project Moonbase: “I’ll turn you over on my knee and spank you!”
Robot Holocaust: The Avacado Dad looks sad.
    Moon Zero Two: Moonopoly!
Untamed Youth: “COME ON BOYS, CARRY MY BANANAS!”
The Black Scorpion: “I’LL TECK CARE OF DEM!”
Rocketship X-M: “I did some of my best work by moonlight.”
Sidehackers: JC’s skip after his little show.
Jungle Goddess: “A HAMBURGER SAMMICH AND FRENCH FRIED POTATOES!”
Catalina Caper: Fingers O’ Toole hallucinates a jazz band underwater.

Everybody’s mentioned it by now, but I agree with the sentiment on “Hercules Unchained”. Ulysses’ little happy fit on the bed seemed to be just screaming “Stinger!”; why they went with Omphale just looking off into space, I’ll never know.

Also, my picks for the Season 8 episodes that didn’t have stingers…
    805: “She’s found water! Yay!”
    806: What else? “STAAAYY!”
807: Bob’s happy little hop-step after mashing face with Claire
808: “Sauvage Pierre” goes for a ride in his bed

Cave Dwellers-the shot of a stand-in dummy getting catapulted during the siege at the end. I think it was a ‘Charlie McCarthy’ riff. Teenage Strangler-Mikey, on his bike, runs into a fence in a very awkward and pathetic way.
Quest of the Delta Knights-Baydool draining the wizard then throwing the pee.
Future War-the dinosaur breaks into the huge guys’ halfway house then slams Simon to the ground “Save the meatloaf!”
Boggy Creek 2-Deputy Williams getting attacked by a muppet or Tim’s terrified expression when he sees the creature the first time.
Final Justice-the early shot of the sheriff getting shot and sliding down the wall, the same shot which was used twice.

Incredible Melting Man: Atchka! When I saw that I was so sure it was going to be the stinger!
Sword and the Dragon: The traitor running away with his pants down after getting stuck in the bear trap, or the goofy dragon, or the line ‘You probably joust with milk maids behind the barn’

Agree with # 30, ‘Today is dedicated to Uranus’ was a missed opportunity!

801- Revenge of the Creature: “She’s like my wife; she’s not much, but she’s all I got.”
802- The Leech Woman: (anyone of the surprisingly mean things the doctor says to his wife)
913- The Screaming Skull: (The wife character screaming from seeing the skull on the doorstep; Gumby’s dad landing on the barn roof; or when Gumby very high-pitchedly says “mother”)
1007- Track of the Moon Beast: “Paul is not Paul anymore!”
1012- Squirm: “No springs!” (I’ve always been surprised they didn’t choose something from the short)

There are many others, but that’s all that I can call to mind now.

I love 63’s pick for Merlin, but my second choice there would be the yelling poltergeist expert:

    “NEVER LET IT KNOW!”

  16. KJB says:

“MY GOD, DAVID!!” from MSOMW was a missed opportunity.

    Oh man, great topic!

Here’s my stinger choice, but be forewarned: it’s an Unpopular Fandom Opinion.

“Overdrawn at the Memory Bank” is one of my favorite episodes. It has a really popular stinger, where Raul Julia is trying to say “Mom…am I nuts?” but it comes out as “Mom…my nuts?”

The thing is…I’ve always heard it as the correct “Mom…am I nuts?” so I’ve never really found that stinger as amusing as the others. And I’ve always wanted them to replace it with something else, because Overdrawn is FULL of crazy moments.

Other Season 8 choices: I thought they could have chosen a different one for “parts” and “Horror of Party Beach.”

Also: Phantom Planet had a terrific stinger (the “Good and the Beautiful” speech). However, if that moment didn’t exist, then I have a great idea for a replacement. There’s a moment late in the movie where the big battle just ended, and a character expresses her gratitude that the worst is over. Then Francis X. Bushman’s character randomly exclaims, “And yet I am FILLED with re-GRET!” It cracked up Mike and the bots, and it made me laugh pretty hard as well.

    Yay, my topic was picked!

@ #53 – That was the moment I had in mind when I suggested this topic.

Another good one from I Was a Teenage Werewolf: “Every time I assembled a motor my way, he beefed.”

  20. I like the Overdrawn stinger but a good replacement would be the immortal line; “You almost got muster on his brain!”

    My ideas for alternate stingers:

The Screaming Skull: Gumbo getting a wrench thrown at him.
Merlin’s Shop: The critic breathing fire.
Final Justice: “You son of a…”
Hamlet: Pretty much any of the more remembered lines from that play.
    Squirm: “NO SPRINGS!!!”

I’ll follow #26’s example and just go wild. Though we also have to remember that these stingers are things that are memorable from the movies without the riffing to support them. Though I’ll omit movies I haven’t seen, ones where I prefer the current stinger, or ones that others have already mentioned (and that I’ve seen).

104: Women of the Prehistoric Planet – The “frozen” crew members clearly moving.
    106: The Crawling Hand – “70! KILL!!!”
107: Robot Monster – Another loop of the deja vu ending as Ro-Man storms out of the cave.
111: Moon Zero Two – “If we’re gonna play, we’re gonna play by my rules!” Cue slow-motion fighting.

202: Sidehackers – “My own flesh I don’t love better!”
206: Ring of Terror – Tiny fainting during the autopsy.
207: Wild Rebels – “That square bugs me! HE REALLY BUGS ME!”

301: Cave Dwellers – Ator’s hang glider carpet bombing raid.
309: Amazing Colossal Man – “What sin could a man commit to bring this upon himself?”
311: It Conquered the World – “Okay maybe I go rustle up some cheeckens.”
320: The Unearthly – “In science it’s always been necessary to make sacrifihces!”
321: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians – “Torg! Come out of the space! Ship!”

    408: Hercules Unchained – “Look! I’m hungry!”
410: Hercules Against the Moon Men – The meteor crash effect at the very beginning.
420: The Human Duplicators – “I now know, that I too, am an android.”

505: The Magic Voyage of Sinbad – Morgianna’s “elevator ride” onto the water’s surface as (not) Sinbad sings.
507: I Accuse my Parents – “I probably shouldn’t say this, your honor, but I accuse my parents.”
508: Operation Double 007 – “I’ll give you something greater than you’ve ever dreamed of: You’ll live with me!”
515: Wild Wild World of Batwoman – Rat Fink doing his “Peeping Zorro” bit.
516: Alien from L.A. – “Hold it! Is that really your voice?”
517: Beginning of the End – Any cut of the driving footage with the same background every time.
518: The Atomic Brain – Mrs. March stabs Victor with her darning needles. (Quoth Servo: “Darn!”)
519: Outlaw of Gor – The Hunter’s oh-so terrific spear throw that kills Lara.
524: 12 to the Moon – “I am now activating my invisible ray shield!”

601: Girls Town – “I tried to tell you the first time I came here!”
609: The Skydivers – “Oh Pete! Pull it! PULL IT!”
610: The Violent Years – The gas station attendant falls after being pistol whipped.
612: The Starfighters – “I always knew sex was corny, but whoever knew that corn could be so sexy?”
614: San Francisco International – The kidnapper dramatically locking the hotel room door.
616: Racket Girls – “Just beecause you theenk I am Mexican I’d do such a theeng?”
619: Red Zone Cuba – “Water! Thirsty! Sick man!”

705: Escape 2000 – “No sugar, you idiot! It makes me CRAZY!”
706: Laserblast – Billy’s colliding with the van when chasing Cathy after his final transformation.

    808: The She-Creature – “That sounds like King’s bark.”
815: Agent for HARM – “DRIIIIIIVE!”
816: Prince of Space – “Your weapons are useless against me, Phantom!”
821: Time Chasers – Nick gets knocked back out of the plane immediately after catching up to it on horseback. “You wanna fly! LET’S FLY!”

903: Pumaman – “Each man is a god. Each man is free!”
910: The Final Sacrifice – “Then what’s that there mark there doin’ on your shoulder there?”

1007: Track of the Moon Beast – “PAUL IS NOT PAUL ANYMORE!”
1012: Squirm – “Mr. Beardsley?! Well where IS he?!”

As a bonus, while the line was cut from the movie, here’s one from This Island Earth: “Our size is the size of our God!”

Off topic, but Batman’s (movie) butler just passed away.
    In the Philadelphia Inquirer:
“Michael Gough, 94, the British actor best known for playing Bruce Wayne’s butler, Alfred, in a series of Batman movies, died Thursday at his home in England.
Mr. Gough appeared in more than 150 movies and television shows, including the British science-fiction show Doctor Who, and recently voiced characters in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Corpse Bride. But he remains best remembered for his role as Alfred Pennyworth in the Batman franchise, opposite three different Batmen: Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, and George Clooney.”

There were about 5 silly Uranus lines in Hercules and the Captive Women. I think there’s one about the Blood of Uranus flowing through us or how we will be bathed in the blood of Uranus that would’ve been… really childish actually, but still hilarious.

I’m way late to this discussion, but I was watching Night of the Blood Beast last night… instead of the doc’s “wounded animal that large isn’t good!” line (though it is pretty funny) I would have chosen the “snarf farms” line. That whole scene, both the original line and M&TB’s confused reaction, always cracks me up. Does ANYONE have any idea what the heck he’s really saying? Or, if I’m hearing him correctly, what the heck a snarf farm is?

Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, my Stinger choice would either be “My name is……………………………….Appalonia James.”

or when Fingal’s face gets stuck in that horrible ghastly rictus just before they dopple him.

  32. Warren says:

#78 The old audio isn’t very good, but he’s probably saying “snark firing” in reference to a missile that was used at that time. I wouldn’t have guessed that independently but I saw it on the IMDb forum for Blood Beast. I listened to the line again very closely, with my ear next to the speaker, and I’d bet it’s “snark firing”. ‘Snarf farm’ should’ve resulted in a Thundercats riff, but I doubt the brains were watching that cartoon in the 1980s.

Jack Frost – “Nastenka’s the one I-I-I-I waaant!”
